“I’m amazed and thankful that something I love doing so much is helping someone else catch a break.”
These words pierced my ears as Charlene Lyle, a faithful volunteer and Board Members, said them at a recent meeting. As I listened to these words, my heart skipped a beat. Habitat's ultimate goal is to build a house, but it’s in the everyday activities that each volunteer gives a special kind of talent and skill to help reach that goal. As we have increased our building capacity from five to seven homes annually with a vision of ten homes per year, our need to recruit and retain volunteer groups and individuals has become crucial.
Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg is more than just giving a few hours of your time to pick up a paint brush or hammer some nails. The Corporation for National and Community Service lists several benefits to weekly volunteering, such as relieving stress and depression, giving a sense of community and accomplishment, and of course, good mental and physical health.
If you are considering volunteering in the community, we’d love to have you come serve with us. Volunteers are needed each Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Construction supervisors will be on-site training each volunteer. No previous construction experience is necessary to come help. To learn more about volunteering, click here.
