Through the Homeownership Program, Habitat Spartanburg helps Spartanburg County community members achieve safe, decent and affordable homeownership.
Those interested in a Habitat home must first complete the Homeownership Program.
We accept applications for the Homeownership Program whenever space is available, and the application process takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Once approved, participants must complete all program requirements within 1 year, and Habitat homes are typically move-in ready within 6 months after that. From start to finish, the whole process typically takes 1-2 years.
The core requirement in the Homeownership Program is earning at least 350 hours of Sweat Equity. "Sweat Equity" refers to the hands-on involvement of our program participants, primarily through volunteer work on our construction sites and in classes on home maintenance and financial literacy. The purpose of Sweat Equity is to build partnership, pride in homeownership, and the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful as a homeowner.
Upon successful completion of the Homeownership Program, participants have the opportunity to purchase a safe, decent home with an affordable monthly mortgage payment. The exact nature of homes can vary, but we typically build 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom homes in or near to the City of Spartanburg with a low- or no-interest mortgage.
To date, we have served more than 150 families through this program, and more than 55 have fully paid off their homes!

We do not build houses on land that we do not own, and we do not perform whole-house rehabilitations at this time. If you are interested in repairs on your current home, please consider our Critical Home Repair Program as an alternative.

Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg has pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. Policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin.
